In our fast-paced world, artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, work, and interact. But with the incredible benefits of AI come serious questions about its ethical use. On August 27, 2024, I had the opportunity to attend an insightful webinar titled AI-Wareness: Ethical Use of AI, which dived deep into the pressing issues surrounding AI's ethical implications.

Let me share with you what I took away from this eye-opening session.

The Ethical Side of AI – A Necessary Discussion

The webinar focused on AI's growing role in sensitive areas like healthcare, privacy, decision-making, and even warfare. What struck me most was the potential for AI systems to inadvertently reinforce biases. Imagine an AI tool that decides who gets a loan or who qualifies for a job—if not carefully managed, these systems could easily discriminate without human oversight.

The speaker stressed that transparency is essential. AI systems must be designed with fairness in mind, ensuring that their decisions don’t unfairly impact certain groups. Without ethical guidelines, we risk creating technology that deepens existing social inequalities.

Applying Ethical AI in Everyday Life

After attending the webinar, I’ve become more conscious of how AI plays a role in my daily life. It made me think about the ways I can incorporate ethical AI practices in both personal projects and professional settings. Moving forward, I’ll be more mindful of ensuring transparency and fairness when working with AI systems.

Moreover, raising awareness about the potential risks and benefits of AI in my circles is something I plan to advocate for. Keeping discussions about AI ethics alive is important to ensure technology continues to serve all of humanity fairly.

The Event – What Worked Well

The webinar was a breeze to follow, thanks to the well-organized flow and the speaker’s ability to break down complex topics into easy-to-digest points. What I appreciated most was the mix of real-world examples and in-depth explanations of AI’s ethical dilemmas. Plus, the interactive Q&A session allowed us to ask questions directly, which brought more clarity to the key issues discussed.

Suggestions for the Future

While the event was highly informative, I feel it could’ve been even more engaging with the addition of live case studies or hands-on group discussions. This would have given attendees the chance to apply what they were learning in real-time, making the session more interactive and practical.

Additionally, providing follow-up resources, like reading materials or guides, would be a great way for participants to explore AI ethics.

Final Thoughts

Attending the AI-Wareness: Ethical Use of AI webinar made me realize just how important it is to think critically about the way AI is shaping our world. As we move forward, it's up to us to ensure that AI continues to evolve responsibly. The more informed we are about ethical AI practices, the better equipped we’ll be to make sure this technology serves us all equally and fairly.
